Project Overview

NYC Vintage Vault is a vintage watch dealer specializing in rare, character-driven timepieces. The brief was to design and build a refined, minimal website that felt timeless, editorial, and product-led — allowing the watches to speak for themselves.

The final direction landed on a black and white visual system, emphasizing contrast, restraint, and longevity over trend.

Visual Direction

The chosen aesthetic was intentionally stripped back:

  • Black & white palette to reinforce timelessness and seriousness

  • High contrast typography to create hierarchy without decorative UI

  • Clean layouts with generous negative space

  • No rounded corners or visual effects — sharp, classic edges throughout

This approach mirrors the nature of vintage watches: understated, precise, and enduring.

Key Design Decisions

1. Black & White Visual System

The final visual direction intentionally embraces a stark black & white palette. This choice reinforces timelessness and visual clarity — qualities that mirror the heritage of vintage watch collecting. On the live site, this clean dichotomy ensures that visual focus remains on the product imagery and typography, rather than decorative UI elements.

2. Typography-Led Hierarchy

Rather than using color or UI embellishments, hierarchy is created through:

  • Type scale

  • Weight

  • Spacing

This keeps the interface quiet while still feeling intentional and premium.

3. Structural Simplicity Over Ornamentation

To avoid clutter and ensure longevity, the design avoids:

  • Rounded corners on cards and buttons

  • Excessive shadows or decorative borders

  • Non-essential graphic elements

This restraint creates spacious layouts that highlight the product images and storytelling content without distraction.

4. CMS-Driven Simplicity

A single master Watches CMS controls:

  • Available pieces

  • Sold / Archive items

  • Featured watches

This avoids fragmentation and keeps long-term content management clean and scalable.

Challenges

  • Early-stage brand with no existing logo or visual system

  • Evolving content and imagery late in the process

  • Balancing premium expectations within a lean launch scope

The focus remained on delivering a solid, neutral foundation rather than over-styling too early.

Outcome

  • Launched a clean, minimal Webflow site

  • Established a timeless black & white visual direction

  • Delivered a scalable CMS for watch inventory

  • Created a strong base for future brand and visual evolution

Reflection

This project demonstrates the value of restraint in visual design — especially for luxury-adjacent brands. By focusing on typography, spacing, and structure over decoration, the site feels intentional, flexible, and built to mature over time.
